You Can't Picture This

Videographer Rajesh Thind was filming in London when he was approached by the police. A disagreement ensued about the rights of photographers/videographers to film in public spaces. Rajesh decided to follow up and find out exactly what the rules are as you can see in this very interesting story. This is something that all of us have to be aware of and deal with on an increasing basis.

World Press Photo Interviews

World Press Photo is an international organization founded to recognize and support press photography around the world. The centerpiece of the group is the World Press Photo Contest which offers an overview of how press photographers work worldwide.

World Press Photo has put up interviews with the winners from both 2007 and 2008. You can hear short clips of the photographers describing their photos and what it took to capture the image. Highly recommended.

Tragic loss to The Art Car Museum and Houston

I didn't attend this year's Art Car parade due to family commitments but I know that many of the Houston Photoblogger community will have, as it is one of the most colorful, fun photographic events on the Houston calendar.

As a newbie to Houston 4 years ago it completely amazed me that such a 'bizarre' event existed, but I'm very glad it does exist as Houstonians are all the richer for it.

So I was very saddened to hear of the tragic and completely preventable death of Tom Jones, Photography curator of the Art Car Museum, early Sunday Morning.

We can only hope that somehow something positive can come out of this.

PhotoNetCast

There's a new photography podcast on the listening landscape, PhotoNetCast. The podcast is manned by photography bloggers Antonio Marques, Martin Gommel, Jim Goldstein and Brian Auer.

Our idea is to stand out from the crowd and turn this podcast into a more relaxed and dynamic feature with a roundtable format. Instead of delivering the common "how to’s" we intend to bring our own opinions and discuss the latest news going around in the photography world with a special focus on what is released by photography bloggers.

Some of my favorite podcasts are roundtable discussions so I look forward to watching this podcast develop. Stop by the website to download their latest episode which covers the topics: photographers or terrorists, video on Flickr and protecting your online images from theft. The website also has links to each of the host's websites as well as ways to subscribe to the podcast.

Camera Basics

Shawn Duffy has written up an excellent article on how to take great photos with a point and shoot camera. This is a good review for people whether they have a point and shoot or have moved up to their first DSLR. This is not an in depth article but more of a brief overview of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, camera modes and more.

Check it out and bookmark it in the future when your family and friends ask you to explain again what all those photography terms mean.

To Shoot or To Photograph

Jim Goldstein asked an interesting question at his blog. Do you shoot or do you photograph? Which term do you use when describing what you do? Is there a difference? Does it matter?

I have in the past had people do a double take when I said I was going out shooting and consequently have tried to change that part of my vocabulary. However, I still refer to my photos as shots sometimes and I am not convinced calling them photographs is going to change people's perceptions of my photography or change my approach with my camera.

It is an interesting debate. Whatever side of the vocabulary fence you sit on I encourage you to read the article and especially stop by the comments which has a very good discussion from both viewpoints.

The Power of Photography

20080303_print_texas1_2

Perhaps this might generate some discussion. Flicking through the March edition of PDN I came across an article reviewing a recent Dallas News multimedia picture story by Photojournalist Mona Reeder, the title of the review was: The Dickensian State of Texas. The facts and pictures of this multimedia show are both shocking and alarming but also very powerful and show just how important a tool the camera continues to be in bringing stories to our attention.

The Power of Photography

We all know that the way in which news is communicated these days has radically changed in the era of Web 2.0 and that the 'art' of photojournalism is undergoing a huge evolution. So I wanted to share with y'all the very powerful work of MediaStorm.

As photobloggers we can if we choose, use our photography to communicate issues about the community we live in.

Here are two incredible stories that I thought you might find interesting, which merge both photo and video:

Photoblogging communities

One of the great things about Flickr is how easy it is to find new photographers and to bookmark beautiful photographs. This is not so easy in the photoblogging world where each site is an entity unto itself. While we await the rebirth of Photoblogs.org, the grand daddy of photoblogging directories, let's look at a few options that help you find more visual goodness.

1.) VFXY
http://photos.vfxy.com/
VFXY makes use of photoblog's RSS feeds to create a visual directory. Photoblogs submit their site for inclusion on VFXY. The wait is sometimes lengthy because the moderators hand check every site for quality and make sure that all the RSS feeds are working. Once the site is listed, new photos will show up on the home page. Members, and any one can be a member whether you have a photoblog or not, can then "collect" images which adds them to a favorite images page or "favorite" entire photoblogs. You can then go to VFXY and see the latest work from your favorite sites. You can also look in the "buzz" and see what photoblogs and photos have recently received attention. A photoblog's VFXY page gives you a quick overview of the images that have been added in recent days or you can click on the photo to go to the photoblog itself. VFXY also has a ratings system and a search feature so you can search by location, photographer or photoblog.

2.) Photoblog Community
http://www.photoblog-community.com/About.php
Photoblog Community is a photoblog directory. You can search for new photoblogs by the search feature, the comment cloud or by categories. Once you find a photoblog you like you can vote for it or leave a comment. On the home page you can see the top sites in each category. When you submit your website you can view your stats (who voted and commented on your site) and you can add tags to your photoblog to make it easier for people to find you.

3.) vi.sualize.us
http://vi.sualize.us/
vi.sualize.us is the new kid on the block just launched in October 2007. Think of it as the photographic version of a del.icio.us bookmark. You can control who views your bookmarks, add other users to your watchlist to keep track of their bookmarks and search and organize bookmarks by tags. On the front page you can see photos that were recently bookmarked as well as the most popular photos.

Of course another great way to find new photoblogs and great photographs is to visit our blog roll! New members are added each month (amazing). Also check out our del.icio.us page for links to more great work by Houston and Texas photobloggers.
