Stop! Press!

It's a Saturday, how about a game. A camera game. You are Jimmy Olsen. See if you can capture Superman with your lens. Beware, he's really fast!

Rice Village Photomarathon

Looking for a fun new way to explore Houston and challenge yourself with your camera? If so then check out the next Houston Photomarathon. Photomarathons are starting to spring up around the world and we are lucky to have our very own here in Houston.

This is how a photomarathon works. You arrive at a set location, in this case the Rice Village, where you will receive four themes. You will then have four hours to take four photos per theme in the designated area. That may not sound hard, but you have to creatively think on your feet in a short amount of time. Four hours sounds like a long time, but trust me it really flies. Once the four hours are up you turn in your photos to the contest organizer and sit back to find out the results.

You can find out more information and see results of previous Houston Photomarathons here. You can register for the Rice Village event which takes place on Sunday September 2nd here. Registration is $35. Hope to see you there!

2007 NA Photobloggers Meetup in Chicago

If you happen to be in the Chicago area later this month, the 2007 North America Photobloggers Meetup is April 27-29. Chicago is an amazing city to photograph, and this looks like a great way to meet the people behind some of the best photoblogs in the country. Hopefully there will be some Texas photobloggers there to represent our fine state.

Geotagging

Calling all Houston Photobloggers; Would you like to be part of a new project?
Ever heard of Geotagging ? Geotagging is a relatively new phenomena in which you can attach geographic coordinate metadata to your pictures so that people can see where you took the photo.
A new twist on this is Zoomr a photo-sharing site a bit like Flickr, but with a geotagging option associated with GoogleMaps. You don’t actually need to have a photo that is geotagged, you can assign to GoggleMaps once you have uploaded it.
I had been thinking about sharing this discovery for a while, I opened my Zoomr account a week ago after reading about it’s creator Thomas Hawk on the BBC website (I can’t find the BBC link unfortunately). But this morning I was spurred into action after Jeff Balke’s comment on one of my photos . Well I thought, this is a perfect reason to use geotagging so that people will be able see where their photo was taken in relation to yours, as people add more and more geotags you could then identify photo hot spots of interesting places......there are all sorts of possibilities.
So my challenge to all of you is; go and try Zoomr, upload some of your existing pics, but more importantly go out and take new ones. We have an opportunity to be adopters of something new and build a really interesting project, allowing people to discover where all the great and perhaps not so great places in Houston are. To get you started I thought we could have a quirky contest to photograph potholes in roads, wouldn’t it be great to see a map of Houston showing people where the worst roads are? Well there are much better challenges, this was just a thought to get you going.
Take a look at the few photos I have uploaded and see what you think, but remember it is a beta site and it isn’t as refined as Flickr, it may or may not compete with Flickr, but it certainly seems like a fun idea.
On a similar topic checkout this little sony gadget.

I look forward to getting your feedback!

Cheers

Houstonist Happyist

Houstonist is hosting a Happy Hour and we are all invited. AND they are buying the drinks!

We're working under the assumption that you haven't made plans for after work Wednesday, Aug. 2, yet (and that if you have, you're about to change them). Houstonist will be having our first happy hour that day — we're calling it "Happyist," because that's how we roll — and you're invited. Did we mention we're buying you drinks?

So, the details: Come by Poison Girl between about 6ish and 8ish, have a drink on our tab (until the tab runs out, that is) and meet us Houstonists.

Not that I really have to tell you, but if you go take your camera!

Houstonist Happyist
6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2
