Teach the next generation

I received the following email and want to pass the information on to Houston Photobloggers readers.

My name is Jon De La Rosa and I work for a non-profit organization called Citizen Schools. This is an after school program in Title 1 HISD schools, where we help middle school students in their academics.

We also have Apprenticeships, where a volunteer from the community comes to our campus and teaches what he or she has a passion for. Past Apprenticeships that we have included were mural painting, solar car building, fashion modeling, and banking and investing. At the end of each semester we have a WOW, where students showcase what they have learned, and present it to the school community.

We are currently looking for new Apprenticeships and new volunteers in the community. One of my hobbies is photography and I am looking for any one who is interested in teaching a photography class to these middle school students. You get an $80 budget, and if you need more you can request it, field trips are possible.

If you are interested in engaging a new generation of photographers you can contact Jon at delarosa dot jon at gmail dot com. And don't be scared of the middle school kids! They really respond to these type of activities that let them express themselves creatively.

Gear Sale

Hello Photobloggers

Just in case any of you are looking for new lens right now, I thought I would offer Houston Photobloggers first refusal on some gear I am selling. All three of these lens have been looked after very carefully and two of them are still very new.

Sigma Zoom Normal-Telephoto 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS USA
Retail price $999.0 1.5 yrs old Selling Price $790

I really enjoy using this lens, it has been great for wildlife shots and I have also used it for sporting events. With such a wide focal range the real advantage is that you don’t have to keep changing lens (should you not have a second camera & keeps the dust out). Kind of reluctant to sell but must to raise funds for a new purchase.

Zoom Super Wide Angle 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras
Retail price $499 1.5 yrs old Selling Price $395

This lens was designed for DLSRs with a APS sensor size (XT, XTi, 20D, 30D) that have a x1.6 magnification factor. This is one of a few lens that offer you the equivalent of 16-32 mm (full frame) enabling you to get true ‘super wide angle’. It is a brilliant lens and I have been very pleased with it. However, it won’t be compatible with my new camera.

Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM Autofocus Lens
Retail price $189.95 Selling price $ 70

The first telephoto I had with my DSLR. Build quality is not to the same standard as the other two lens and it has been criticised in some reviews. However, for a light weight telephoto it is not bad. In fact it did me proud with shots I took of Brazos Alligators when I first arrived in Houston.

If you are interested leave me a comment or send me an email and we can discuss. I’ll put them up on ebay if no fellow Houston photobloggers are interested.

Nikon Coolscan 4000

Hey all! So I'm a bit of a lab mouse for the guest post system.

So, for sale: Nikon Coolscan 4000. It is a 4,000dpi 35mm film scanner with ED glass, dust removal, etc. Great condition, original box and all accessories, including single-slide holder, 6-slide holder, negative roll film feeder, firewire card, etc. Asking $500.
