Inspired by London Photobloggers who were inspired by New York City Photobloggers (and let's not forget blog.photoblogs.org), Houston Photobloggers will begin spotlighting one photo a week on this blog.

If you would like your photo to be considered for the Spotlight just add it to our Flickr pool. That's it!

Houston. It's Worth It.

Houston It's Worth It! I believe that whole heartedly, which is why I am a fan of the website Houston It's Worth It. Now you will be too when I tell you that they are sponsoring an open-call photography exhibition along with the Houston Center for Photography.

You can submit up to 5 photos of things that you think make Houston unique and your photos will be exhibited at the Houston Center for Photography in August. I didn't say they would be considered, I said they WILL BE EXHIBITED in August. Cool huh? Photos that are submitted for this exhibition will also be considered for publication in a book titled Houston. It's Worth It.

I can tell you are excited. I am for many reasons, but mainly because this is right up Houston Photobloggers alley. Who knows the quirky side of Houston better than we do? We don't go only to the big events, we hit the streets, we scour our neighborhoods for all kinds of images to feed our blogs. I know that we will have some amazing work showing off Houston in this exhibit.

What exactly are they looking for?

Houston. It’s Worth It. and the Houston Center for Photography announce an open-call exhibition for distinctive photographs relating to life in Houston. We won’t discourage you from submitting sparkling images of downtown taken from Allen Parkway on a glorious day, we’ll just forward them to the Greater Houston Partnership. We’re really looking for photographs that capture the idiosyncratic, chaotic, and diverse qualities that make Houston unlike any other city in America.

Everything that you need to know can be found HERE under the Show Us Why section. Please let me know (houstonphotoblogs at gmail dot com) when you submit a photo to the site. I will gather the names and make sure we all know who will be exhibited and let everyone else know that we are the Houston Photobloggers!

Houston Happenings

There is so much going on I can barely keep it straight (and I'm not talking just about work!)

First let's talk about this weekend (do keep in mind the weather forecast):

1.) Houston Dragon Boat Festival - Saturday May 6th 8:30 - 4:30 p.m. Allen's Landing

HERE is the website where you can find out everything you wanted to know about Dragon Boats and the festival. There will be over 30 teams racing throughout the day so you will have a chance to catch some action. Of course the best part of the Dragon Boat Festival this year is that our very own Sarah Graybeal (saroy) designed the logo that is on all the advertisements. What can this girl not do!

2.) Cinco de Mayo Parade - Saturday May 6th 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Downtown Houston

This is the 14th Annual Cinco de Mayo Parade and Festival and the event will also showcase arts in the local community. The theme is “Doors to the Arts”. HERE is some information about the parade and HERE is a parade map (both are PDF files).

Second, next weekend.

One of our members asked me about a possible meet-up at the Art Car Parade. I'd like to get a head count of people who were planning on attending the parade and might be interested in meeting up. If people are interested in meeting up I'd also like to hear your thoughts on when in the day. Before the start of the parade, during the parade, after the parade? Leave a comment and let me know what your plans are for the parade. It may work out that different people are interested in different parts of the parade and you may find another Houston Photoblogger to shoot with.
